Construction Updates
Student Union
PARKING LOT CLOSURES:
Due to construction, several parking lots will be closed beginning May 25th.
Administrative Center The east parking lot (#24) of the Administrative Center will be closed from May 25th through August 3rd to route utility lines for the new Student Union. During this time, all accessible parking will be located at the west drive.
Oak Street Parking Garage closes Sunday, June 14, and will remain closed throughout the summer for needed repairs. The structure is scheduled to reopen by the start of the Fall 2009 semester.
Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field
Construction activities began on the site of the Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field on Tuesday, November 25th.
CONSTRUCTION SITE ACCESS:
Construction site access for this project will primarily occur from Cherry Street to the west and Bixby Lane from the north. There will be intermittent traffic interruption on Bixby Lane, throughout the project, as construction equipment and materials are delivered to the site. It is anticipated that these individual interruptions will last no longer than 5 to 10 minutes.
SIDEWALK CLOSURES:
The sidewalk on the east side of Cherry Street from 50th Street to 51st Street and the sidewalk/walkway on the south side of Bixby Lane from Cherry Street to the Performing Arts Center will be closed until further notice. Alternative routes from the Residence Halls and University are along 51st Street from Cherry to Holmes Streets to access Swinney, Performing Arts Center and University Center. In addition, the west sidewalk on Cherry Street and the north sidewalk/walkway on Bixby Lane will remain open.
Miller Nichols Library Phase I Addition
(Automated Storage and Retrieval System Addition)
Construction activities began on the site of the Miller Nichols Library Phase I Addition on Monday, December 22nd.
CONSTRUCTION SITE ACCESS:
Construction site access for this project will primarily occur from Rockhill Road along 51st Street. There will be intermittent traffic interruption on the north Miller Nichols Library access throughout the project, as construction equipment and materials are delivered to the site, but the primary access will be from 51st Street. It is anticipated that these individual interruptions on the north access drive will last no longer than 5 to 10 minutes.
STREET CLOSURES:
51st Street Lane Closure The westbound lane of 51st
Street between Rockhill Road and Holmes Road will be closed from Monday,
May 11th through Friday, August 14th to allow for construction
activities at the Miller Nichols Library Phase I Addition. Detour
signage will be in place to direct traffic around this disruption
utilizing 52nd Street. Access to the parking areas on the north side of
Flarsheim Hall will be via the eastbound lane only.
SIDEWALK AND SOUTH ENTRY CLOSURES:
The sidewalk on the north side of 51st Street from Holmes Street to Rockhill Road and the south Miller Nichols Library entry are now closed. Alternative entry routes to the north entry of the Miller Nichols Library have been constructed west of the Library. The accessible entry route passes through the Fine Arts Building from the University Walkway to the Miller Nichols Library north entry.

The staff of Miller Nichols Library recognize the significant disruptions that construction projects can create and have established a separate project website to help keep our customers informed of construction changes inside the library. Hospital Hill Street and Sidewalk Disruptions Due to Children’s Mercy Hospital Emergency Addition Project
Construction activities are ongoing on Hospital Hill related to expansion plans at Children’s Mercy Hospital.
CONSTRUCTION SITE ACCESS:
Construction site access for this project has resulted in the closure of the existing Dental School north drive. A temporary drive provides parking for Dental School patients. Children’s Mercy Hospital is offering valet parking to assist with congestion. Remote parking for patients remains available in lot 28A east of the Health Sciences Building. The existing Dental School north drive will be rebuilt over the next two months, but vehicular and pedestrian access will remain at all times.
STREET CLOSURES:
The lane closure on 25th Street has now been removed and all lanes are open. Work continues on Holmes Street north of 25th, but one lane remains open at all times.
SIDEWALK AND DENTAL SCHOOL ENTRY CHANGES:
The pathway from the Dental School/Children’s Mercy Hospital parking to the Dental School north entries will change as various construction activities progress. Since the activities are weather dependent, the timing is uncertain. Extra caution is advised in this area.
