Projects in Planning

“Projects in planning” have existing plans, but they are without complete funding. No construction schedule has been set.

Hospital Hill student housing

The beginning phase of building student housing for the Hospital Hill campus calls for 250-bed apartments, with expansion to 400 beds at a later time. A tentative site for surface parking for the apartment occupants is a tract of land partly owned by the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

Impact

Health Sciences students can reside on Hospital Hill and avoid travelling from the Volker campus residence halls to classes.

Project Estimate: $25,500,000

Project Funding:

Other $25,500,000

Interactive Learning Center Addition

An Interactive Learning Center Addition, providing more educational and support space, will be built west of the Miller Nichols Library. The complex will feature multi-use spaces for collaborative learning, library instruction, and information technology. As the smallest public university in a comparable sized city, UMKC is not able to meet the workforce needs of Kansas City adequately. The new facility will increase instructional capacity by approximately 25% to support enrollment growth.

A separate $20M project, funded by campus resources and private gifts, is underway. In this project, a new automated storage and retrieval system will permit construction on the addition to proceed while access to resources is maintained.

Project Estimate: $41,430,000

Project Funding:

State $14,880,000
Gift $10,620,000
Debt $15,930,000

School of Dentistry Building Addition

As the only dental school in Missouri, UMKC’s School of Dentistry is a major source of available, high quality oral health care. Since its founding in 1941, the UMKC School of Dentistry has been known for community service and free or affordable treatment. The school’s strategic place in health education is especially felt in rural areas, where more practitioners are needed.

Impact

  • The strain on existing usable spaces and equipment will be eased by the clinics, labs and classrooms in this addition.
  • Class size was increased recently, to allow for 20 additional students to and meet Missouri’s needs. If the School adds 25 more students, enrollment will go from 80 annual entering students to 125 a year.

Project Estimate: $20,180,000

Project Funding:

State $15,390,000
Gift $4,250,000
