Herman and Dorothy Johnson Hall
Construction of the Herman and Dorothy Johnson Hall began in June of 2008, and the hall is slated to open in August of 2009. The Herman and Dorothy Johnson Hall will lie directly north of Oak Place Apartments at 50th and Oak Streets.
Impact
- With room for 328 students, the Herman and Dorothy Johnson Hall will accommodate a growth in enrollment and UMKC’s transformation into residential campus.
- By dividing residents into eight 41-person communities (wings), the Herman and Dorothy Johnson Hall will help students form friendships. Students also can gather in a social lounge, kitchen, classroom and music practice rooms.
- The Herman and Dorothy Johnson Hall will support UMKC’s sustainability initiatives by becoming LEED Certified.
- Construction debris will be reprocessed into useful products. Much of the building materials have recycled content and were produced regionally.
Cost
$17 million
This project is funded with revenue bonds that will be paid with student housing fees.
