Dancing sculpture
Gracing a plot of land that borders the Performing Arts Center, the Swinney Recreation Center and the University Center is a work of art known as “Dancing.” It is a gift from Spigel Properties, San Antonio, Texas, and was done by local artist Rita Blitt.
Impact
Stanley Spigel of Spigel Properties made this generous gift to UMKC. This piece of art is part of the impressive body of work by Blitt, both on campus and throughout Kansas City.
Fast Facts
- Blitt works in paper, oils, sculpture and film, and maintains three studios throughout the US. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from UMKC in 1952.
- “Dancing” has graced the Bannister Mall in Kansas City since 1980, but was removed when the mall was sold.
- The yellow, painted-steel figure is made of three separate pieces and stretches to an impressive height of 26 feet.
- In addition to exhibits on campus, Blitt has contributed her own visual works for performances to benefit the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance.
